Mercatogenesis

The term, mercatogenesis, as defined here, is the power to create and shape markets.  With the powers of production to easily create excessive supply, instruments were developed to create markets where markets for a product had not previously existed.  Edward Bernay’s application of psychological knowledge to advertising and to propagandistic manipulation of public opinion is an important background prop.

What will be examined here is the potential for the public, when properly educated–as is becoming increasingly possible–to regain control of the marketplace of commercial products and culturally important ideas and practices.
